The existing jail is certified to house 88 inmates and is located in Downtown Van Buren across the street from the existing Sheriff’s Office and Jail Intake office. The County selected a property close to the interstate where a new Jail and Sheriff’s Office could be construction. This facility will include a courtroom to be used for first appearances to minimize movement of inmates to the Courthouse. The facility is designed to allow for future expansion in both the housing area and Sheriff’s Office. The 63,600 s.f. facility, housing 306 inmates, has a budget of $18.4 million and is scheduled to be complete mid 2016.
